Cocktail Glossary – D to F
Daisy: a sour cocktail with a liqueur used as a modifier such as the Margarita.
Dash: an imprecise measurement usually denoting a few drops or a very small amount of a liquid.
Digestif/Digestivo: an alcoholic beverage consumed after a meal to aid in digestion.
Dirty: usually refers to a Martini made with a small amount of olive brine and garnished with an olive.
Eau de Vie: a type of brandy made from distilling fermented fruit and berries, for example, pear eau de vie.
Falernum: a spiced, sweet and citrusy syrup or liqueur used to flavour (commonly) rum-based tropical cocktails. More about falernum here.
Fizz: a sour style drink made by adding soda water such as the Ramos Gin Fizz.
Flip: a cocktail that contains a whole egg, sugar a spirit or fortified wine.
Float: a method of layering a cocktail ingredient in the glass, for example, the Penicillin cocktail.
Free Pour: refers to pouring alcohol straight from a bottle without measuring.
