“Something with mezcal, stirred and served up.”
How often do you walk into a bar with a specific spirit in mind and order a drink off the menu?
Letting the bartender know the style of drink you’re after has its advantages. There’s the element of surprise, the anticipation of the first sip along with the possibility that the drink may not meet expectations – particularly when you’re in a strange bar, late at night and far away from home.
The bar in question was in a remote part of town and didn’t have any mezcal but it didn’t stop the bartender from suggesting a smoky agave alternative with Tequila and a little Islay whisky.
El Smoko Cocktail is based on that original and unnamed drink which provided the much-needed smoky fix. The cocktail was properly chilled, with a perfect balance of agave notes, peat smoke and a hint of citrus.
