Navy strength gin lends itself well to a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks. Here are 7 navy strength gin cocktails that pack a punch.
What is Navy Strength Gin
The term “navy strength” harks back to a time in the nineteenth century when gin was rationed in the Royal Navy. The spirit was kept below deck near the gunpowder and if the gin spilled on the gunpowder, it ignited. Lower proof or diluted gin didn’t have that property so it became a test of the proof of the gin and was referred to as navy strength.
While there isn’t an official definition for navy strength gin, to be called so, it has to have a minimum of 57% ABV or 114 proof. Using the higher proof spirit in cocktails is not just about ramping up the ABV, it broadens the flavour spectrum as the botanicals retain more of their essential oils making it ideal to mix in cocktails.
Navy strength gin lends itself well to a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks. It could easily be used in a Gin & Tonic or a Gin & Soda but its robust flavour and enhanced botanicals pack a punch in cocktails.
