The Smoky Habanero Margarita can be enjoyed any time of the year and not just as a Halloween cocktail or a black Day of the Dead cocktail.
The Smoky Habanero Margarita combines fresh agave notes of silver tequila, smoke from mezcal with the fiery heat from the habanero lime syrup (store-bought) and tartness of lime juice.
To give the cocktail a Halloween/Day of the Dead look, the drink is served up in a black matte coupe with an acivated charcoal ice cube.
To make the charcoal ice cube, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder in 250 ml of water. Add to a silicone ice cube tray and freeze overnight. Activated charcoal doesn’t dissolve very well so the ice cubes are likely to turn out clear on the top with a black layer with sediment at the bottom. Simply flip the ice cube so that the top is black. Alternatively, you could add about 1/4 bar spoon of the powder before shaking to create a black cocktail.
Activated charcoal doesn’t add flavour or texture but it is messy to use. It should also be used with caution as it is known to absorb medications, toxins, vitamins and nutrients.
