Not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo (5 May) which celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla, Mexican Independence Day marks the day in 1810 when priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urged Mexicans to revolt against Spain’s colonial government, a call referred to as Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores. The date has major significance as it was the beginning of a war that brought independence to Mexico in 1821.
