Cinco de Mayo is holiday that is observed annually on May 5. Here’s how to join the celebrations with Altos Tequila.
What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May is a celebration of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862. A popular holiday in the United States, the day is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage particularly in areas populated by Mexican-Americans. In the 1960s, the Mexican-American community began raising awareness of Cinco de Mayo partly because they identified with the victory of indigenous Mexicans over European invaders during the Battle of Puebla. Today, Cinco de Mayo celebrations are adopted around the world with parades, parties, Mexican food and tequila cocktails.

Altos Margarita Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
- 60ml Altos Tequila Plata
- 30ml fresh lime juice
- 15ml agave syrup
Glassware: rocks glass or tin cup
Garnish: lime wheel
Method
In a cocktail shaker, add lime juice, agave syrup and Altos Plata. Top with ice and shake until cold. Strain into a rocks glass or tin cup, top with ice and garnish with a lime wheel.
Altos Paloma Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
- 60 ml Altos Tequila Plata or Reposado
- 30 ml lemon juice
- 15 ml agave syrup
- 60 ml freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
Glassware: salt rimmed tall glass
Garnish: grapefruit wedge
Method
In a salt rimmed tall glass, build the drink starting with lemon juice, agave syrup and Altos Tequila Plata or Reposado. Give it a gentle stir. Add ice cubes and top with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
Altos Bandera Cocktail Recipe
The Altos Bandera is a 3-sip cocktail with the colours of the Mexican flag.
Sip 1: 25ml lime juice + 5ml agave syrup
Sip 2: 30ml Altos Plata or Reposado
Sip 3: 30ml Sangrita
Sangrita Recipe
Makes 1 litre = 40 servings
750 ml tomato juice
100 ml lime juice
100 ml lemon juice
dash Tabasco
dash grenadine
2 pinches sea salt
2 pinches black pepper
To make the Sangrita, combine all the ingredients, stir and serve.
