The Breakfast Martini was created in 1996 by the highly acclaimed bartender Salvatore Calabrese, “The Maestro” and has since become his signature drink.
The renowned bartender came up with idea when his wife thought he looked worse for wear one morning and insisted he has breakfast and she gave him toast spread with marmalade. Later, he decided to play with the flavours and create a cocktail that was inspired by the English breakfast.
The Breakfast Martini is a gin-based cocktail with marmalade as the key ingredient. A citrus forward gin plays well with the orange notes of the triple sec or Cointreau, the sourness of the lemon juice and the bitterness of the orange marmalade. The drink is garnished with orange zest although some bars use a slice of toast on the rim of the glass.
The Breakfast Martini is well suited to brunch and is an alternative to a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary. Now you have an excuse to use up that jar of marmalade and start the day right with a good dose of Vitamin C. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
