With the festive season around the corner, thoughts turn to a little pick me up with the Corpse Reviver #2.
Belonging to a category of drinks referred to as “hair of the dog”, the Corpse Reviver #2 is a classic drink named after its supposed ability to bring back the dead. As the name suggests, it is one in a series of “Corpse Reviver” cocktails and the #2 recipe is considered to be the most delicious of the lot. Our own version, the Corpse Reviver #666 makes use of squid ink to give it a briny character and a glossy black appearance.
The Corpse Reviver #2 is featured in Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930) with a proviso that “four of these taken in quick succession will unrevive the corpse again.”
The “hangover cure” is an equal parts cocktail which is apt if you’re making it for yourself the day after a big night. Gin, lemon juice, Lillet Blanc and triple sec are shaken with ice and served in an absinthe-rinsed glass. If you don’t have absinthe, you can try Pastis though the effect is not quite the same.
