Vanguard Luxury Brands, fully independent importer and distributor has added Death’s Door Gin to its portfolio.
Death’s Door Gin hails from Death’s Door Spirits in Middleton, Wisconsin in the USA. It derives its name from the most treacherous waterway in the Great Lakes, a stretch called “Death’s Door Passage” which separates Washington Island from the Door County peninsula in northern Wisconsin.
Death’s Door Spirits was founded by Brian Ellison in 2005 in conjunction with families on Washington Island to offer a sustainable future through agriculture, in particular the growing and harvesting of organic hard red winter wheat. They started with five acres under cultivation and have since grown to 1,200 acres. In addition to wheat, Death’s Door sources wild juniper berries (Juniperus virginiana) from Washington Island for the production of its gin.
Death’s Door Gin is classified as London Dry and is a simple mix of three botanicals, juniper berries, coriander and fennel seeds with a base spirit that includes hard red winter wheat, corn and malted barley. The gin is crafted using the vapour extraction process, and the balanced blend has helped earn its place in significant cocktail bar programs, and in the minds of bartenders, who consider it a soft, versatile gin.
At 47% ABV, the flavour profile mirrors the three botanicals with loaded juniper berries up front; spicy, citrusy notes from the coriander seeds in the mid-palate; and a soft, cooling finish provided by the fennel seeds. The gin is a fine example in how complementary and complex simple expressions can be. It’s big enough to stand up to classic or vintage cocktail treatment, but soft enough to be enjoyed on the rocks or in a dry martini.
Death’s Door Spirits has a significant presence across all 50 U.S. states, the United Kingdom, across Europe (Germany, Italy, Netherlands) and Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China).
Death’s Door Gin is available in 700ml bottles in Australia through Vanguard Luxury Brands.
