FAIR Quinoa Vodka (40% ABV) is made in the Cognac region of France using organic quinoa from Bolivia. The spirit is organic, gluten-free and Fair Trade certified. But what does it taste like?
Quinoa is considered to be an ancient superfood used by Incan warriors some 5000 years ago, and if vodka can be made from potato or grain such as corn, wheat and rye, why not quinoa?
The spirit is the result of almost two years of research between Bolivian producers and French distillers to produce a vodka out of a double brewing operation and subsequent distillation.
The quinoa is grown in Bolivia by small independent producers grouped under a cooperative called the ANAPQUI, and cultivated according to the methods of organic farming. The quinoa seeds are are fermented and distilled in a special column still by Fair’s Master Distiller, Phillippe Laclie. The spirit is distilled only once to retain the flavour and aroma of the nutty seed which is gluten-free.
FAIR Quinoa Vodka comes in a minimalist clear bottle with a simple white label that reflects humble origins. It has a mild grain aroma on the nose that is almost nutty. Silky on the palate with a good mouthfeel, the spirit has a hint of citrus, spice and subtle heat. It is pleasant to taste but it doesn’t have the flavour of quinoa.
Try it in a Martini with a twist of lemon. It may be the most novel way to enjoy this superfood.
