The Godfather Cocktail is a two ingredient cocktail, a simple combination of Scotch whisky and amaretto served on the rocks.
While the origins of the Godfather are hazy, some attribute it to The Godfather movie starring Marlon Brando, others claim it was invented by Disaronno liqueur while another theory claims it was created by by a bartender called Donato Antone in the 1950’s.
The ratio of Scotch whisky to amaretto also varies with the 1:1 ratio deemed a little too sweet for the modern palate. The Ultimate Bar Book by Mittie Hellmich describes it as “a popular drink from the 1970s” and favours the 2:1 ratio as well as shaking the ingredients:
2 ounces scotch or bourbon
1 ounce amaretto
Shake the ingredients vigorously with ice. Strain into a ice filled old-fashioned glass.
In Mr Boston Official Bartender’s Guide, the drink is built the glass.
1 1/2 oz. blended Scotch Whisky
3/4 oz. amaretto
Pour into ice-filled old-fashioned glass and stir.
Whichever way you decide to mix it, go with the ratio that suits your palate.
