The Grasshopper is a classic after dinner cocktail that heroes crème de menthe which gives the drinks its signature green colour.
The Grasshopper is a classic cocktail that heroes crème de menthe and the drink of choice on Crème de Menthe Day. The mint-flavoured after-dinner drink was created by Philibert Guichet in the 1910s for a cocktail competition in New York City. His drink won second place and when he returned to Tujague’s restaurant in New Orleans which he had recently purchased, it became the signature cocktail.
The original recipe for the three-ingredient liqueur cocktail calls for equal parts crème de menthe, white crème de cacao and heavy cream shaken very well until well chilled and garnished with grated chocolate. It’s sweet and rich, and invites variations such as tweaking the ratios, substituting ice cream for heavy cream or garnishing with a sprig of mint.
