New to the Australian market, Hernö Gin hails from Sweden, in the village of Dala just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland.
Hernö Gin Distillery was founded in 2011 by Jon Hillgren. At the time, it was Sweden’s first dedicated gin distillery and the world’s northernmost gin distillery. Five expressions of gin are produced from organic neutral wheat spirit and organic botanicals using the one-shot distillation method. The gin is non-chill filtered and cut with water from the distillery’s own well.
Hernö Gin
Hernö Gin (40.5% ABV) is a London dry gin made from eight certified organic botanicals from around the world: juniper berries, coriander seeds, lemon peel, lingon berries, meadowsweet, black pepper, cassia and fresh vanilla. It has a round juniper character with fresh citrus notes, coriander spice and a hint of black pepper on the finish.
Hernö Navy Strength Gin
Hernö Navy Strength Gin is made from the same distilled gin as Hernö Gin but diluted to 57% ABV which gives the gin a bolder juniper note along with coriander, citrus and a richness of flavour. Crisp juniper notes are followed by spicy citrus and floral notes that finish long and smooth with mellow warmth.
Hernö Old Tom Gin
Hernö Old Tom Gin is made from the same distilled gin as Hernö Gin and Hernö Navy Strength Gin with two extra steps. First, an additional amount of meadowsweet is added in the distillation, then once the gin is cut down to 43% ABV, a touch of honey is added. The result is an Old Tom gin with woody spice aromas, juniper and floral notes, light sweetness on the palate with notes of pine flowers and a long finish with floral sweetness.
Hernö Juniper Cask Gin
Hernö Juniper Cask Gin is the original Juniper Cask Gin, aged in casks made out of juniper wood. The gin is matured for 30 days in 39.25 L juniper casks then bottled at 47% ABV. Fresh woodiness and junipery pine notes are characteristics of this gin with a palate of green juniper upfront that leads to a long lingering finish of sappy juniper.
Hernö Sloe Gin
Hernö Sloe Gin (30% ABV) is based on Hernö London Dry Gin and made as a traditional Sloe Gin. Organic sloe berries are macerated in the gin for three months then gently sweetened. They impart a jammy sweetness upfront balanced with dryer and tarter notes. Best sipped neat over ice, in a Gin and Tonic or in a French 75.
