It’s bright and neon green and an equal parts cocktail. The Japanese Slipper takes you back to the era of Disco Drinks.
The Japanese Slipper has its origins in Melbourne, Australia and has earned a reputation of being an iconic drink. The liqueur cocktail was created by Jean-Paul Bourguignon in 1984 at Mietta’s Restaurant in Melbourne.
In recent years, we’ve seen a growing trends towards putting the fun back into drinks. We’ve seen some bars revive retro drinks such as the Grasshopper. The Japanese Slipper is one of those cocktails that you don’t overthink. Made of equal parts Midori melon liqueur, Cointreau and lemon juice, it may not appeal to most modern palates with its sweet, fruity profile with a touch of acidity but it’s a fun drink to make and enjoy.
The traditional cocktail garnish is a Maraschino cherry, usually those bright red nuclear cherries dripping in sugar that are so far removed from real cherries. We prefer to use brandied cherries which are very easy to make at home and keep for a long time in the fridge.
