We’ve previously written about the gin renaissance which led to the ubiquitous Negroni on many cocktail lists from high end bars to restaurants and pubs. This is a recipe for a Negroni with a twist.
This cocktail recipe deviates from the usual gin base. The Mezcal Negroni is a twist on the original, a smoky riff on the classic using mezcal, tequila’s smoky cousin instead of gin. It’s another 3-ingredient cocktail recipe that can be easily replicated at home. The drink balances smoky agave notes with the bitterness of Campari and the sweetness of red vermouth.
In this cocktail, we served it in a Coupe instead of a rocks glass. It elevates the drink and with proper stirring over ice, you get the right chill factor and dilution to make it stand up in a stemmed glass.
Mezcal, like peated Islay whiskies may not be to everyone’s taste. If the power of the smoky agave spirit is not to your liking, simply choose a mezcal brand with subtle smoke.
