Few drinks pay homage to overproof rum like the Nuclear Daiquiri.
Created in 2005 by Gregor de Gruyther at the LAB bar in London, the cocktail calls for two high proof ingredients, Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum (63% ABV) and Green Chartreuse (55% ABV) with lime juice and falernum.
The “nuclear” combination is in the intensity of the white rum, coupled with the herbal Chartreuse as well as the higher proof.
Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum may be difficult to come by and an Australian distillery in Byron Bay has created a worhty equivalent. Made from local molasses and filtered spring water, Lord Byron Distillery Fire Cane OP is double batch distilled and bottled at 63% ABV.
A homage to the modern classic is the Nuclear Daiquirye (see photo above), a cocktail that was on the opening menu (2016) of Sydney bar Kittyhawk and calls for Archie Rose white rye (55% ABV), Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, Yellow Chartreuse, house falernum and lime.
