Here’s how to make the Pomegranate Cosmopolitan Cocktail ahead of World Cosmopolitan Day on the 7th May.
The Cosmopolitan Cocktail
Before the women of Sex and the City made the Cosmopolitan a popular drink in the late 90s and early noughties, it was King Cocktail, Dale DeGroff who popularised the pink cocktail.
“There has to be a high level of deliciousness which the cocktail had in the recipe that Toby [Cecchini] and I were doing.” – Dale DeGroff, Talking Cocktails with King Cocktail
While the origins of the drink may be disputed, the recipe for the Cosmopolitan or Cosmo cocktail consists of citron vodka shaken with lime juice, triple sec and cranberry juice. The recipe for the Pomegranate Cosmopolitan cocktail makes use of freshly juiced pomegranates in lieu of cranberry juice.
How to Juice a Pomegranate
When it comes to using pomegranate juice, fresh is always best. There are various ways to juice a pomegranate. The simplest and least messy method is to cut the pomegranate in half and while wearing disposable rubber gloves, gently separate the arils from the skin and membrane. Place the pomegranate arils in a blender or food processor and pulse until it turns to liquid. Strain using a fine strainer lined with cheesecloth, pressing down in the solids to extract as much juice as possible.
The flavour of pomegranates can vary along the tart and sweet spectrum. Taste the juice to check if the level of sweetness is to your liking. You may need to adjust the lime juice a drop or two at a time to achieve the right balance.
