The Spicy Tequila Old-Fashioned is a spirit-forward agave based cocktail with a touch of heat and smoke that is easy to make at home.
The old-fashioned cocktail template lends itself to many variations. Aside from using bourbon, whisky, rum and even gin, it works well with aged agave spirits.
For the Spicy Tequila Old-Fashioned cocktail, we’ve chosen reposado tequila where the ageing in oak casks imparts vanilla notes to the drink. This is complemented with a little mezcal for earthiness and smoke. Ancho Reyes Ancho Chile Liqueur adds a layer of heat along with fruity spice and mouthfeel. If you can’t get hold of the chilli liqueur and want to retain a spicy kick, you can put garden-fresh jalapeños to use to make jalapeño-infused tequila and increase the amount of agave syrup.
This riff on a classic hits the spot for when you want a boozy, smoky and spicy agave-based cocktail that is easy to mix.
