On June 5, National Moonshine Day celebrate the drink holiday with the White Manhattan Moonshine cocktail.
Of all the white spirits, moonshine doesn’t feature prominently in cocktails. What originally started as illicit hooch in the USA is now legally produced by craft distillers around the world with many distilleries making an unaged spirit good enough for neat consumption and for use in cocktails.
This cocktail recipe for the White Manhattan pays homage to the early days of imbibing moonshine in that it is spirit forward with a good measure of white dog that isn’t masked by other ingredients. The moonshine is balanced with dry vermouth and Lillet Blanc, the latter adding complementary citrus and orange notes. Stirred and strained, of all the moonshine cocktails we’ve had, the White Manhattan moonshine cocktail makes an elegant and fine sipping drink and one that would appeal to martini drinkers.
