How to make basil syrup for cocktails, a cocktail modifier infused with fresh basil leaves.
Basil (Ocimum basilicum), also known as sweet basil is an annual culinary herb in the mint family native to India and tropical regions from Africa to Southeast Asia. One of the most popular herbs and the easiest to grow in an edible garden, it is widely cultivated for its aromatic and edible leaves.
Basil Syrup Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- leaves from 5 basil sprigs
Method
In a small pan, combine the sugar and water and slowly bring to a boil, stirring all the time until the sugar dissolves. Simmer for one minute then remove from heat. Add the picked basil leaves and leave to steep for at least 15 minutes. Strain the basil syrup using a fine strainer and store in swing top glass bottle with a lid in the fridge.
Use in cocktails such as Basil Gin Gimlet and Gin Basil Smash
