The Cape Gooseberry Cocktail takes inspiration from the French 75, a gin-based champagne cocktail flavoured with the fruity liqueur.
Cape Gooseberry is a shrub that grows about one metre high and produces orange berries encased in a paper lantern-like calyx. In a previous article, we featured a step by step guide to making the Cape Gooseberry liqueur with lemon balm. This recipe puts the liqueur to use by marrying the sweet-tart-berry notes of the berries with gin. A floral style of gin is preferable as it complements the fruity notes of the liqueur while retaining its delicate notes. The drink is lengthened with Brut Champagne or Prosecco. The result is an elegant sipping drink, neither too sweet or too tart, that is well suited to anything from an afternoon aperitif to a celebratory cocktail.
