The Chestnut Old Fashioned is a winter warmer cocktail that adds a nutty note to the classic whisky cocktail.
In a previous cocktail project, we presented a DIY method for making chestnut liqueur for cocktails or to sip neat on cold winter nights. Chestnut liqueur adds a nutty and autumnal note as well as a hint of smoke when the chestnuts are roasted on a bed of coal or over a fire.
This variation on the classic Old Fashioned works equally well with whisky, bourbon and American whiskey, particularly if the whisk(e)y in question is aged in a higher level of charred barrels. The cocktail is finished with an expressed orange zest, preferably grown organically and a roasted chestnut. Sipping by the fire is optional.
