Michter’s whiskey has announced a limited release expression, Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Barrel Strength Rye.
After releasing Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon, Michter’s has made available a new limited release expression, Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Barrel Strength Rye. The Straight rye whiskey is distilled in Kentucky, USA. Each barrel is bottled at a particular alcohol level at the time of bottling which means the ABV will have a slight variation between batches. The average ABV of the barrels in the September 2017 release was 54.3%.
The cask strength rye expression is first matured in fire-charred, new American white oak barrels then finished in a second barrel that’s toasted but not charred, made from 24-month air dried wood.
Difference Between Toasting and Charring
Toasting is like a fireplace fire with a low intensity flame. The toasting process takes over an hour and brings the sugars to the surface of the wood creating what is referred to as the “red line”of wood sugars and thereby adding natural sweetness to the whiskey. By contrast, charring takes less than a minute and involves the use of an intense flame. The wood ends up looking like alligator skin when the charring process is complete.
By law, all American whiskey must be aged in first-use charred American white oak barrels. Toasting is not a compulsory requirement but all Michter’s barrels are toasted first, then charred.
Tasting Notes
The tasting notes describe the spirit as having enhanced spice notes with delicate chocolate overtones balanced by some vanilla and honey, hints of roasted nuts and dates. The lingering finish of burnt brown sugar is reminiscent of crème brûlée complemented by some smoky campfire highlights.
