The Salty Dog is a classic cocktail that is a variation on the Greyhound. The difference between the two is the salt rim. Unlike its predecessor which dates back to 1930 where it featured in Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book, this tall drink is attributed to George Jessel who created it in the 1950s.
The drink can be made with either gin or vodka, and it pairs very well with tequila (see Paloma). Tart, tangy, salty and refreshing, just what is needed on warm spring afternoons in the garden when entertaining friends.
Salty Dog Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
- 45ml vodka or gin
- 90ml grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed and strained
- salt for rimming
Glassware: Collins glass
Garnish: grapefruit wedge
Method
Wet the rim of the glass and dip it into salt. Add vodka or gin over ice cubes, top with grapefruit juice and stir gently to combine. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
