When it comes to tequila cocktails, it is often the Margarita and Paloma that first come to mind. Yet before we were mixing tequila with lime and triple sec, there was an earlier version.
The Toreador cocktail was first mentioned back in 1937 in the Cafe Royale Cocktail Book by British bartender William J. Tarling. The drink predates the first written Margarita recipe and combines tequila with apricot brandy, fresh lime or lemon juice.
1/2 Tequila.
1/4 Apricot Brandy.
1/4 Fresh Lime or Lemon Juice.
Shake.
Apricot brandy contributes a sweeter and fruitier flavour which balances the sour notes from the lime juice; an approachable drink that puts the agave notes centre stage. For a mellower variation, try mixing it with reposado tequila.
Toreador Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
- 45ml blanco tequila
- 20ml apricot brandy liqueur
- 20ml lime juice, freshly squeezed
Glassware: cocktail glass
Method
In a cocktail shaker, add tequila, apricot brandy and fresh lime juice over ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
