To many, it’s labelled as a dull drink. Here’s how to upgrade the Vodka, Lime and Soda with DIY vodka infusions you can easily make at home.
Vodka, Lime and Soda has been called many things. It may be the epitome of a boring drink, the bane of bartenders’ existence and dubbed as the Skinny Bitch. Yet the simple mixed drink remains popular in many bars where many attest that it “helps pay the bills”.
What is essentially a highball for drinkers who don’t want to taste or smell the alcohol, the drink won’t challenge the imagination or the palate. Yet it has some merits. It’s low in sugar, low in calories and can be refreshing on a hot summer’s day. We won’t go as far as calling it a healthy drink when alcohol is involved.
To make it, you simply build it in a glass by adding 30 ml of your favourite vodka, top with soda water and a squeeze of fresh lime. Hardly needs a recipe. Just like gin and tonic is enjoying a place in the sun, Vodka, Lime and Soda could do with an upgrade while keeping the calories low.
Upgrade Your Vodka Lime and Soda with DIY Vodka Infusions
DIY vodka infusions are simple to make at home and don’t require special equipment or too much effort.
You’ll need:
- quality vodka
- fresh ingredients, preferably low in sugar (see below)
- a glass jar with a tight lid
- fine strainer/muslin cloth
- funnel
- clean swing top glass bottle
You simply steep the fresh ingredients in vodka for a period of 24-36 hours, tasting as you go. The period of infusion depends on your personal taste. Fine strain into a swing top glass bottle, discard the solids and store the infused vodka in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 months.
