A. Baker Canberra: Hidden beneath A. Baker bakery, restaurant and café in Canberra’s New Acton precinct is A. Baker Bar, an underground speakeasy that draws you in through a dark steel and concrete staircase.
Continuing the theme of charred and distressed walls of the cafe, the basement bar’s industrial chic interior by DesignOffice includes massive maritime lamps illuminating the red Alicante marble top bar.
The ambience is far removed from the bustling bakery upstairs. You can huddle around small tables or stand in a corner but the place to be is to perch at the bar. The one thing that you will notice about A. Baker Bar, aside from the striking fitout is the extensive range of Australian spirits. Staying in line with the food ethos upstairs to use local produce, the bar features a solid range of Australian gin, vodka, rum, vermouth and other spirits along with the more traditional brands.
A succinct list of cocktails is based on classics given the A. Baker touch. Start with a Peach Bellini or a chilli Vodka Bloody Mary and move on to stronger drinks such as Dave’s Sloe Gin Negroni made with McHenry’s Sloe Gin from Tasmania. The mojito gets a refreshing splash of ginger beer and the A. Baker Margarita gets an egg white, shaken with the tequila and citrus and served over ice.
A. Baker Bar is the kind of bar you discover the first time then start planning your return. The vibe is chilled and unpretentious, and it’s a cool place where you could lose yourself in the company of good friends and the finest libations.
