Lucky’s Speakeasy Canberra: The bar scene has had its fair share of speakeasy bars popping up around Australia in recent times, and although some proclaim there is a growing backlash to the genre with cocktails of lengthy prep, there is still an attraction to a hidden bar waiting to be discovered.
Lucky’s Speakeasy is located inside the QT Hotel in Canberra which you access through the Barber Shop. The name sets a certain expectation of a dimly-lit intimate venue with period jazz and a degree of exclusivity. But Lucky’s is a different style of bar.
With a 300 person capacity, a central bar open on all four sides, television screens and modern music pumping through the speakers, it takes a little time to reset expectations. But don’t let these details deter you.
On a Friday evening, the bar is vibrant and buzzing with patrons sitting along banquettes beneath cabinets with an enviable collection of vintage glassware and barware. Some are politely joining a single file for bar service. Others are sipping sundowners at the outdoor bar with a 1968 Olympics Row Boat on the ceiling in a Hampton-inspired rowing club setting.
Cocktails are very popular at this high volume bar particularly after sunset such as the Vanilla Passionfruit Pisco Sour, a fresh and summery drink with citrus and vanilla notes. The signature cocktail menu is eleven strong and changes with the seasons along with nine classics. The Truffle Negroni ($21) infuses truffle oil in gin for one week and comes with a truffle salt rim. There’s a Barrel-Aged Vesper ($20) worth trying, softened with sweet and oaky elements and an unforgettable Smoked Pale Ale ($19) made with chilli-infused Mezcal, pale ale, lime, agave, habanero shrub and American bacon salt that is set to bring you back.
The food has an American focus with mini lobster rolls, popcorn chicken and oldies such as mini sausage rolls and a boat load of mini Bratwurst. A food cart changes with popular varieties such as tacos, duck pancakes and Italian cured meat.
Lucky’s Speakeasy may have a mixed identity but that’s easily dismissed. With well-crafted cocktails, a friendly bar team and welcoming vibe, you’re certain to be back.
