Waterslide Bar is a new addition to Melbourne’s Southgate, a venue that pays homage to Southbank’s history.
Located along the banks of the Yarra River at the Princes Bridge end of Southgate, the venue offers panoramic views of the river, the city and Flinders Station. The precinct was once known as Princess Court where during the early 20th century, Melburnians flocked to a giant waterslide, toboggan rides, a large ice skating ring as well as circuses, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
The stylish venue has been designed by Techne Architecture with dark timbered interior accented by clever, reflective mirror finishes that give a sense of space, framed old newspaper clippings and an impressive island bar. Outdoor seating with spectacular views around sunset invite long, lazy imbibing with good friends.
Waterslide’s venue manager Tim Wastell has teamed with Fred Siggins of the Black Pearl to bring an enticing cocktail menu that also features wines, spirits and beer. Signature cocktails give a nod to the heritage of the location with Wirth’s Circus made with Don Julio Blanco Tequila, fresh pressed watermelon juice, Cocchi Americano, coriander, served tall and the Princess Court, made with Tanqueray Gin, whole lemon, lavender syrup, soda, lemon thyme.
The extensive wine and spirits menu impresses with its scope, featuring nine pages dedicated to whisky. You’ll find some rare and limited editions such as Rosebank ‘Limited Edition’ 21 yo, Talisker 30 yo and Johnnie Walker ‘King George V’. Agave Spirits are also a feature with a solid range of tequila, mezcal, sotol and raicilla.
The succinct food menu combines lighter options such as Mediterranean-style octopus, market fish carpaccio and arancini balls, to more robust ones such as Cuban sandwich, pork belly skewers, deep fried potato and ricotta gnocchi along with charcuterie and a fine cheese selection.
Whether it’s cocktails for two on a cosy lounge or highball drinks on the balcony overlooking the Yarra, Waterslide Bar is the place to be this summer.
