Wander down Howey Place, an alleyway off Little Collins Street, then down another alleyway past curious street art and garbage bins and you’ll find the blue Tabacchi sign. Congratulations, you’ve arrived at one of Melbourne’s best bars.
Bar Americano is a hidden bar that feels right at home in Melbourne’s laneways. The tiny venue accommodates ten people standing. Inside, you’ll find dark timber panelling, a chequered floor and a wooden counter or ledge to rest your drink or to lean on. A blackboard menu lists various coffees, soft drinks and aperitivi while the intimate bar shimmers with unlabelled glass decanters filled with liquids that give no indication to their content.
But you don’t go to Bar Americano to admire the classic décor that takes you back to a bar/café in Italy.
You go for the cocktails.
You can be given a cocktail menu and you could choose an unforgettable Negroni but you would do well to leave the choice up to the bartender. Your reward will be one of the best crafted drinks you’ve ever had.
“No photos, no shoes, no service” warns you that photography is not allowed. You’re there for the best experience. And it will pull you in time and time again.
