Don’t look for a sign that tells you you’ve arrived at Jacoby’s Tiki Bar along Enmore Road. Instead, look for the friendly security guard beneath “Anna’s Thai”.
Jacoby’s Tiki Bar is the much anticipated venue by the team from Earl’s Juke Joint. The bar is named after Dr Lawrence Jacoby, a character from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. He was an eccentric psychiatrist who grew up in Hawaii and was fascinated by all things Tiki.
A high rattan ceiling with puffer fish lights, an impressive bamboo-lined bar, banana leaf wallpaper, and Tiki carved wooden totems and Tiki paraphernalia are just what you need to be transported to a Polynesian getaway.
A solid list of ten classic Tiki drinks is given the Jacoby’s touch. It pays to sit at the bar under the watchful eye of a shrunken monkey head as most of the drinks come with theatrics such as the Romero, a take on the Zombie described as strong enough to raise the dead. The Chi Chi is a Piña Colada with coconut cream and macadamia nut, and the tequila and rum based blue drink Vicious Virgin #2 is not to be messed with.
Communal drinks for two include The Scorpian which “contains more sting than The Police” and if you’re four persons, opt for the Puka Punch, Jacoby’s take on the Tiki classic with rum, gin, yellow chartreuse, lemon, pineapple, fassionola and Don’s spice mix served in a giant clam.
Into Mai Tais and other Tiki classics? Just ask the friendly bar team. This is the kind of place where you leave problems behind – it simply lets you unwind and escape to another world with a tropical drink in hand.
As Jeff ‘Beachbum’ Berry said, we are in the midst of Tiki’s second golden age and Jacoby’s Tiki Bar embraces the theme well, ticking all the right boxes for authenticity, escapism and well-balanced drinks.
