Laneway Green, a new bar by Matthew Bonasia, bartender and founder of the Cairns Bartenders Network has opened in Cairns.

Located along Mulgrave Road in Westcourt, Laneway Green is approximately five minutes’ drive from Cairns CBD. The 300 pax venue runs adjacent to the refurnished boutique Motel Nomad. At the front is Yankee D’s Bar ‘N’ Q, a popular American-style eatery and at the rear is a hole-in-the-wall bar with a creative menu that changes regularly.
Festoon lights drape throughout the laneway illuminating the scattered vertical pallet gardens and street art. Picnic tables run the length of the astro-turfed space for those relaxed get-togethers with friends. The entry features a pair of swings with a floral backdrop, inviting guests to capture their special moment and share it on social media.
The cocktail menu at Laneway Green is described as being minimal but adventurous. “I offer six cocktails which change as often as inspiration presents itself,” says Matthew Bonasia. “Behind the bar is a kitchen where I can experiment with ingredients and produce flavour-driven and balanced cocktails rather than the booze being the star of the drink.”
Such drinks include the B.B.C Smash, a flavour combination of honey, lemon, blueberry, basil, crème de cacao and rum. Another cocktail that has proved popular with the patrons is the Bitter & Twisted, a mix of agave, lime, watermelon, orange aperitif and reposado tequila. A dozen craft beers and wines that change every few weeks complement the cocktail menu.
It’s not just about the drinks at Laneway Green. Local and national artists and musicians sourced by GOAT Productions perform within the space. With Motel Nomad accommodating out-of-town guests, performers, artists and booze ambassadors, Bonasia has his sights set on pop-up festivals, brewery takeovers, product launches and trade shows.
“The venue is a nexus for the hospitality industry and I’d like to invite all companies and ambassadors to work with me.”
Laneway Green is open Thursdays to Sundays from 4pm until 10pm.
