The Brass Coq in Melbourne’s business end of the CBD is a Vietnamese-inspired restaurant with a cocktail bar well worth visiting.
Take the stairs up to The Brass Coq bar and you’ll enter a world far removed from the vibrant eatery downstairs. Past the street art mural, you can perch at the bar, take a seat near the bar around marble topped round tables or settle into comfortable Chesterfield lounges and armchairs with an inviting décor combining the warmth of exposed bricks with long green drapes and a fireplace.
Co-owner Colin Tam previously Head Bartender at Zeta Bar in Sydney heads the bar. His innovative cocktail list takes inspiration from seasonal fruits and Asian flavours that work in harmony to deliver drinks that are not only complementary to the food but can stand up on their own. Spritzers rotate weekly and the emphasis on seasonality and lightness making them a good choice for an aperitif or two.
The inventive cocktails are based on classics that have been given the TBC touch. The Chrysanthemum Sour is a take on the whisky sour with Chrysanthemum tea syrup adding floral notes to the sour drink while the Oriental Margarita gets a makeover with a zingy grapefruit and yuzu juice sipped through a grapefruit salt rim.
For those in need to a spice kick, the Saigon Mary delivers a spicy and umami hit with the housemade Bloody Mary mix with sriracha, fish sauce, garlic and Vietnamese mint. Should you need a Pharmaceutical Stimulant cocktail and a sugar fix in one, the TBC Espresso is an adult version of the Vietnamese coffee with a house blend cold drip coffee, condensed milk and salted caramel.
If you’re getting peckish, the bar menu tempts with tasty bar bites such as pork skewers, crispy spring rolls and Vietnamese Fried Chicken.
The Brass Coq upstairs bar is open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm to 1am and is available for events.
